When to Replace Your Doors and Windows

When should you repair or replace your doors and windows?

Windows and doors are an integral part of your home. They provide security, insulation, natural light, and ventilation, as well as noise reduction and weather protection. Plus, they help beautify the inside and outside of your home.

When something breaks, whether it’s a stuck door, a broken screen, or a shattered window, it’s time to evaluate if the window should be repaired or replaced.

We generally recommend replacing your doors and windows instead of trying to repair them. However, here’s a breakdown of reasons to replace or repair.

Should I Repair My Door or Window?

Repairing a window or door is sometimes more cost-effective than replacing the entire unit. If the issue is minor and can be fixed without compromising the overall functionality, repair might be the preferable option. Before selecting a repair, however, consider that some repairs are more expensive than just replacing the window or door itself.

Assess the extent of the damage. If it’s a localized issue, such as a broken pane of glass, a malfunctioning lock, or a minor frame issue, repair may be a viable solution. However, also consider the age and condition of the window or door in question.

If the window or door is still in good condition and provides adequate insulation, repairing minor issues can help maintain energy efficiency. This is particularly important for windows since they play a crucial role in insulation.

If the damage is not extensive and does not significantly impact the appearance or function of the window or door, repair can preserve the overall aesthetic of your home.

Should I Replace My Door or Window?

If the damage is extensive, such as a damaged window frame or multiple broken components, or if the door or window is beyond repair, replacement may be the only viable option. Replacement also may be your best option due to unavailable parts, lack of skilled repair technicians, or in situations where the cost of a replacement is cheeper than the repair.

There are also times when a repair won’t be enough. Water damage and rot, for example, cannot easily be repaired.

Older windows and doors may lack modern energy-efficient features. Whether its your doors or windows, energy loss makes your hvac system work harder. In these cases, replacement is almost always the way to go.

Single pane glass in windows should always be replaced due to the energy savings that comes with upgrading to double or triple pane glass. Upgrading to newer, more energy-efficient door models during replacement can also lead to long-term cost savings, which could offset the cost of a replacement vs a repair.

If security is a concern and your existing doors or windows are not meeting current safety standards, replacement with more secure options may be necessary. Repairing the security features on older windows, especially, doesn’t upgrade your security, it only makes the original part more functional. In the same way, older doors can be refitted for new locks, but you can’t install the newer kick-in technology without replacing it for a new door.

If the door or window is no longer functioning properly, and repairs would only offer a temporary solution, replacement may be the more practical choice.

Replacement allows you to update the look of your home. You can choose new styles, materials, and finishes that better suit your preferences and the overall design of your home.
