Getting CertainTeed certified means that you’re working closely with CertainTeed and following their exacting installation requirements.There are two levels of certification that a contractor can achieve – ShingleMaster and SELECT ShingleMaster. While a ShingleMaster has a few requirements, the SELECT ShingleMaster’s credentials are so strict that only a small percentage of roofers ever qualify.
First, SELECT ShingleMasters must be in business for at least 5 years or have been a ShingleMaster for 1 year. The roofing industry has many companies that fail in the first five years, even though most shingles have warranties of 25 years or longer. To have a high level of satisfaction from your shingles, it’s important to be there to support your new roof should you ever need customer service.
Second, 50% of the crew, including supervisors, must be Master Shingle Applicator qualified. This certification ensures that individual roofers are properly trained on installing CertainTeed’s roofing system. In addition to requiring Master Shingle Applicators, there must also be a CertainTeed certified Shingle Quality Specialist on the team.
It’s not enough for just the installers to be certified. CertainTeed requires the company owner to pass a Business Fiscal Responsibility exam. This means that the business owner is aligned with good, solid business practices.
Finally, a SELECT ShingleMaster must hold current workman’s compensation insurance and the proper liability insurance that covers roofing. This gives homeowners peace of mind that, should a disaster occur, the ShingleMaster is always prepared.
