New Front Door

Choosing a New Front Door for Your Home

A new front door is one of the fastest ways to refresh your home's look and improve comfort and security. With so many materials, styles, and finishes available, it helps to have a guide. Volpe Enterprises, Inc. walks homeowners in Montgomery, Chester, and Bucks counties through every choice, then handles the installation from start to finish.

What is the best material for a new front door?

Fiberglass is the best all around choice for most Southeastern PA homes because it resists dents, rot, and weather while needing little upkeep. Steel offers strong security, and wood offers unmatched natural beauty. The right choice depends on your style, budget, and how exposed your entry is.

Material Look Durability Maintenance Best for
Fiberglass Smooth or realistic wood grain Resists dents, rot, and warping Low Most homes and exposed entries
Steel Smooth, painted finish Very strong; can dent Low; touch up scratches to prevent rust Security focused homeowners
Wood Natural grain and rich stain Strong; sensitive to weather Periodic refinishing Covered entries and historic homes

Front door styles to match your home

  • Colonial and traditional: six panel doors, fanlight transoms, and symmetrical sidelites
  • Craftsman: square glass lites up top with flat panels and dentil shelves
  • Farmhouse: plank or Z-brace designs, often paired with matte black hardware
  • Modern: flush panels, vertical glass strips, and bold colors
  • Stone and historic homes: arched tops, rich wood tones, and decorative glass

Glass, sidelites, and transoms

Glass brightens a dark foyer and adds personality. Choose from clear, frosted, textured, beveled, or decorative glass depending on how much privacy you want. Sidelites on one or both sides and a transom above can transform a simple entry into a grand one.

Choosing a front door color

Your front door is a great place to add personality. Classic choices like black, navy, deep red, and forest green suit most homes in our area. Coordinate your door color with your siding, shutters, and roof so the whole exterior works together. Our team can show samples alongside your existing siding during your consultation.

Features that make a new front door better

  • Energy efficiency: insulated cores, low-E glass, and tight weatherstripping
  • Security: multipoint locks, reinforced strike plates, and smart lock compatibility
  • Weather protection: quality sills and proper flashing keep water out
  • Pet doors and storm doors: add-ons that fit your lifestyle

How do I know what size front door I need?

Most single front doors are 36 inches wide and 80 inches tall, but older homes often have custom sizes. Our team measures the full rough opening so your new door fits precisely, and we can enlarge the opening to add sidelites or a wider door.

New front door FAQ

How long does it take to get a new front door? Stock doors can be installed fairly quickly, while custom doors take longer to build. We share expected lead times when you choose your door.

Can I keep my existing storm door? Sometimes. We check whether the storm door fits the new frame and recommend replacing it if the fit or condition is poor.

What front door is most energy efficient? Fiberglass and steel doors with insulated foam cores and low-E glass usually rate highest, as long as they are installed with proper insulation and weatherstripping.

Does a new front door need a permit? A same size replacement usually does not, but enlarging the opening may. We will tell you during your estimate if your project needs one.
